The science behind sport

27 Palestra Olimpica pulita

How do athletes prepare for Olympic or Paralympic competitions? What is their training regime, what equipment do they use, and how much influence do technology and research into equipment have on their results?

This exhibition promotes sport as a means of improving health and wellbeing. It invites visitors to discover how science and technology applied to athlete training currently enables high-level Olympic performances.

As part of the Combinazioni_caratteri sportivi (Combinations_Sports characters) cultural project, conceived and promoted by the Department of Culture of the Autonomous Province of Trento, the exhibition is integrated into the Milano Cortina 2026 Cultural Olympiad. This multidisciplinary, pluralistic and widespread programme will bring Italy together to promote Olympic values and enhance dialogue between art, culture and sport ahead of the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, which Italy will host from 6 to 22 February and 6 to 15 March respectively.

Thanks to interactive exhibits, original gear and equipment – including a compact sitting volleyball court and a floor curling rink, training equipment and research tests – you will understand how athletes prepare for Olympic competitions. You can learn about their stories, touch their gear, try out training equipment, and see Paralympic technology up close, such as hand bikes and prostheses used in track and field events. You can discover and experiment with the principles behind various disciplines, learn about the studies that experts carry out on the performance of champions and athletes, which, by applying scientific methods, enable them to improve their records, as well as the psychological preparation that leads to the competition. As well as providing a scientific perspective on sport and promoting awareness of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) by demonstrating their applications in sport, one section of the exhibition highlights the importance of adopting good daily habits. When combined with a healthy lifestyle, these habits are effective in maintaining physical well-being.
