Frequently asked questions about the Summer School

1. Which documents are required to travel in Tanzania?

All visitors entering Tanzania require a visa. Visitors can obtain a visa on arrival at Dar-es-Salaam or other international airports, costing between 50 USD or 50 EUR and 200 USD depending on nationality, payable in cash. Usually you will be given the VISA request form on your flight and then you have just to proceed to the immigration office at landing.
If you want to avoid the queue, you can obtain a VISA at the Tanzanian embassy or consulate in your country.

Passport - YES
Your passport should be valid for at least six months from date of entry.

Certificate of vaccination – Depends
Only those arriving from an infected country must hold a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Malaria is present in the country, but the prophylaxis is not compulsory. We suggest to discuss with your doctor about the malaria prophylaxis and other vaccinations at least 4 weeks before leaving.

International driving licence – Not required for the school
If you are going to drive a car or motorbike, you are required an international driving licence. You can obtain it in your country of residence before leaving. For Zanzibar Island only, you can buy a temporary permit for about 20 USD.

2. Do I need a travel insurance? – Yes, required by the school

It is recommended to arrange for your own international travel insurance covering health emergencies (evacuation and treatment) and, at your option, also travel cancellation and delay, lost baggage and so on. The organizers will not be responsible or incur costs of accidents that will happen during the school.

3. What does the fee include?

The fee includes:
  • Accommodation in hotel in Dar es Salaam upon arrival and prior to departure (1 night each time)
  • transport to UEMC (Udzungwa Ecological Monitoring Centre) from the hotel in Dar es Salaam, food and accommodation at UEMC
  • park entrance fees for the days of lessons
  • lessons
  • teaching material
  • use of material (GPS, traps, camera-traps..)

4. What does the school fee does not include?

The fee does not include:
  • Travel cost to Dar es Salaam (flight)
  • Travel insurance
  • VISA fees
  • Personal expenses

5. How can I get to the school?

Transport from Dar es Salaam to the school (UEMC) and back will be arranged by the organisers and included in the fees. More details will be available later.

6. Do I have to bring my laptop?

Participants are strongly invited to bring their own laptop. Only a few work station are available at the School, and if you don't have a laptop it is possible that you will work in pairs with another student.

7. Which software do I need on my laptop?

Prior to departure, students are required to install VirtualBox, a program which runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh. It is an Open Source Software, freely downloadable from this website http://www.virtualbox.org/. For installation please follow the instruction provided on the above mentioned website.
Internet connection is not reliable, so we recommend to do the installation before leaving.
A virtual machine will be given to the students, providing all the open source software used in the Summer School. Virtualbox software is required to use this virtual machine.
There are no special request about the laptop hardware and operating system, a reasonably recent laptop will do (as a rule of thumb, any laptop built after 2008 can be suitable).

8. Do I need to bring mosquito net?

No, mosquito net will be provided in the hostel together with sheets.

9. Suggested item to bring

  • Laptop and adapter (Tanzania sockets are the same as in the UK)

10. Can I have university credits?

Credits can be requested to your University.

11. Shall I bring my GPS?

It is optional. Some GPS devices will be provided by the Summer School to use during fieldwork, sharing with other students. If you wish to use yours, you are welcome to take it with you. We recommend new generation units capable to work under dense canopy, such as Garmin Map60 CSx.
